Our Programs

Health & Education

  • Patient & Family Health Education Sessions

    At PADRES, one of our main priorities is for our children and families to be well versed in all aspects of health education. Our monthly Bilingual (Spanish/English) classes are designed to educate all members of the family on such topics as childhood cancer and other related blood disorders, psychosocial issues, nutrition, physical fitness and general family health concerns.

  • Ask the Doctor Sessions

    Communicating with doctors and clinicians in a busy hospital setting can be intimidating. This monthly workshop offers our parents an opportunity to interact with different oncology specialists in an informal setting to discuss general issues about their child’s diagnosis and treatment.

  • Blood & Marrow Donor Drives

    To donate blood is to grant a child the gift of life. PADRES works in close cooperation with Childrens Hospital Los Angeles’ Blood Donor Center, The American Red Cross, and the National Marrow Donor Program to educate Latino families on the importance of donating blood and registering with the National Marrow Donor Registry. We also work with prominent celebrities and local community leaders to sponsor and coordinate quarterly blood & marrow donor drives.

    This program saves Childrens Hospital Los Angeles approximately $130,000 per year in annual blood product purchases

  • Lives in Transition ℠

    A childhood cancer diagnosis has a profound impact on the emotional well-being of patients, as well as, family members. These 8-week workshops and quarterly seminars are designed to educate families about childhood cancer and the emotional health concerns that are a natural consequence of the diagnosis. The program also aims to coach families through the childhood cancer treatment process.

  • General Program & Childhood Cancer Education Brochures

    Access to information is a vital resource in the fight against childhood cancer. PADRES’ general information literature orients families and healthcare practitioners to the nature of our programs, activities and services. Our brochures also feature age and role-appropriate educational inserts for use by patients, siblings and parents.

  • Parent and Family Health Education Kits

    For many PADRES' children and families, access to culturally-relevant health education resources is, at best, extremely limited. In an effort to alleviate this concern, PADRES provides resource kits tailored to meet the needs of families whose children are newly diagnosed cancer patients.

    Materials and resources disseminated include:

    • Bilingual information resources regarding cancer and other blood disorders;
    • Information on CHLA cancer center services;
    • Information regarding additional community resources;
    • Toiletries for extended hospital stays;
    • Other medical necessities

    Children’s kits include a stuffed animal; crayons; coloring books; and age-appropriate cancer education materials.

  • Feria de ESPERANZA (HOPE Fair) ℠

    This annual fair is designed to provide a unique educational forum for the entire family. Workshops Include:

    • Age and role–appropriate cancer education;
    • Stress management techniques;
    • Nutrition counseling;
    • Access to community resources.
