Alfonso, who was diagnosed with leukemia at 4 years of age, also suffers from a heart condition and Down’s syndrome.  For more than two years his mother has been by his side for his medical treatments, while his father worked and his 6 year old brother stayed in the care of a neighbor.  Responsibilities for Alfonso’s mother increased when his father, the family’s sole bread winner, had a debilitating heart attack which caused him to lose his job as a construction worker.  In their time of need they turned to PADRES for economic assistance and emotional support.  Alfonso’s family is only one in over 100 similar family crises that PADRES assists with each month.

During the recession and sluggish economic recovery, PADRES has documented a significant increase in the number of families requesting basic types of resources, such as grocery vouchers, transportation assistance to and from the hospital, parking voucher assistance and peer support groups.  This November PADRES recorded the greatest number of grocery voucher and medical transportation assistance requests in over 26 years.

This December, while many of us are reveling in the joy of the holiday season, many PADRES families will be consumed with worry as to how they will pay for extra costs associated with their child’s treatment, as well as for looking for ways to spend time as a family during the holidays.   PADRES is committed to helping alleviate some of this economic burden and will be focusing on ways to support the family unit while providing them with an opportunity to share in holiday fare together.

You can help this holiday season by supporting our program in 3 ways.
